Loving Perspectives

Hold me.

Here I am, at the space in between. I’m ok with that.

I remember being between college and “real life”, though… and freaking out. I was graduating without a full time job lined up or a destination in mind. I called my dad and cried.

He said, “I figured you would go to Block Island for the summer again.”

“Oh! That’s a good idea,” I thought.

I had spent the summer after junior year on that sweet New England island, where one of my college roommates is from. I had not thought of that as an option. I thought that I was supposed to get a “real” job, start a career or embark on some epic adventure. The truth was I didn’t know what I wanted to “do”.

And the truth is also that I was embarking on an epic adventure — my life as a grownup. That adventure has been unpredictable and with stops and starts, endings and births. There have since been many in-between times. I handle them differently now. I have learned to connect with a center that is unchangeable, a vantage point from which to watch the unfolding of things. It’s beyond my mind — THAT still wants to freak out when it does not know.

From that center I can wait. I am patient. I can feel the presence of helpers — angels, Spirit, loved ones.

Have you been there? Can you feel that? You might have a different word for it. You might say that you rest in God or call on Jesus or let go into the flow of The Universe. It’s that feeling of being held, comforted. It’s a break from the struggle in the mind, from trying to figure it all out.

And it’s more than that. It’s relaxing into the truth of who we really are. It’s good for the world. It cuts through judgement and violence and other mind-made problems.

A Course in Miracles, in Lesson 109, says:

With each five minutes that you rest today the world is nearer waking. And the time when rest will be the only thing there is comes closer to all worn and tired minds, too weary now to go their way alone.

If you are feeling weary, or worried, or exhausted… Rest. Relax. Meditate. Pray. Do whatever it is that drops you out of the potentially hazardous realms of your own mind and into the peace that lies beneath. For 5 minutes.

I often lead a body-centered awareness exercise where you drop your awareness into the center of your body and feel and allow. Allow it all… pain, emotion, whatever state is there.

Sometimes tears need to come. They can flow without a story from the mind.

Sleep might need to come. That’s OK too. Set a timer beforehand if needed.

Witnessing it all with interest and not needing to change anything is rest.

After 5 minutes, if you’re a praying person, pray.

If you know you have angels, call on them.

Keep feeling.

Know that your prayers are heard.

Sometimes we just need to breathe, and wait. Something will happen. Sometimes it’s ok to do nothing until the way is clear.

Sometimes we need to just go to Block Island for the summer, work as a bartender at night and relax on the beach during the day.
