Sometimes leading yoga class I have the students pair up to begin. They sit back-to-back with their partner (whom they may have just met). They breathe together. Then they dedicate their practice to one another. I encourage them to really offer it, to wish that any benefits go to the other – considering that “they may need it more than you do, you never know.”
Then they go back to their own mats and just take class. I remind them periodically, especially going into a difficult balancing pose or challenging hold, of the other to whom they are offering the gift. “Do it for them,” I say.
I started doing this after noticing that I was accomplishing small miracles at the head of the class, when I was doing a pose or a flow FOR the students, to teach or inspire them. The same asanas gave me trouble when I was in class as a student, silently cursing my teacher (often my business partner) and struggling with my body.
It’s a classic case of getting out of the ego, getting into the heart.
Dropping out of the self, and into service.
We’re closer to the Magnificence of Who We Truly Are when we serve another. (Tweet it)
It’s acknowlegding the Truth that we are all One, and it’s Magical. It mobilizes MotherGodFairies and other mystical help.
I talked about this when Erin Giles interviewed me. Now I’m realizing it can be a life strategy, a work strategy, a practical practice. Try it!
Dedicate your day to someone. It’s not too late right now.
See your work as service to Everyone, to the World, or to God… no matter your profession.
Take any opportunity to offer something to another person or being – a smile, a hand, a love note, a break.
Consider something you are struggling with trying to accomplish or create and break your intention down to who it is for and how it will serve. Pray that it be so.
It makes things easier.
It’s Love.
